I grew up on the West Coast of Scotland on a small remote island called Colonsay. Because of the difficulty in getting things to the island, people had to constantly improvise by recycling in order to get by.
Over my life of designing and building, this has been one of the clearest memories from my childhood and still influences me to this day.
When I moved to Australia in 2009 I noticed that good quality wooden venetian blinds were being discarded and heading for landfill. This prompted me to wonder what possible alternative future they might have.
It was this question that the concept of upcycling wooden venetian blinds into light fittings began.
We entered our first Design Awards in 2017 - the prestigious Good Design Australia Awards in Sydney.
After an extensive evaluation process involving more than 35 Australian and international design experts, the Jury have finalised their results and awarded only the best Good Design® Selection.
Adrian Lawson Design - Recycled Pendant Lighting was one of only a few privileged entries to receive the 2017 Good Design® Selection and is now in the running to receive the coveted Australian Good Design Award.
On receiving the Good Design® Selection for Adrian Lawson Design - Recycled Pendant Lighting the Jury commented. "Beautiful, considered design from evry perspective. This is a great example of up cycle design that has resulted in an elegant and well resolved product. The Jury applauds the innovative use of materials and modularity of the design."
Avalon pendant lights are made from recycled wooden venetian blinds. They are available in basswood and cedar. This was one of our first designs and was named after the village of Avalon on Sydney's northern beaches.
